Type 2 diabetes treatment  has gone a step further with introduction of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitors, also known as DPP 4 inhibitors, and incretin mimetics. This mediation facilitates the production of incretins in the body.

Incretins are hormones that help in giving a push to the amount of insulin secreted by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. These mechanisms are very effective in reducing the blood sugar level.
